OVERNIGHT CAMP COUNSELOR
(AGES 18+)
(June 6 — August 1)
Camp Skyline is located in Almont, Michigan. Here at camp we embrace each camper with love and acceptance. We believe that experiences in the natural world with community help develop resilience, joy, and kindness in our campers. Our days and nights are full with programs and activities that aim to send our campers home dirty, tired, and full of joy.
What Makes This Role Unique
Our overnight camp staff work with a remarkable range of ages, abilities, and backgrounds over their time at camp. Every staff member begins their summer working our Special Needs week (June 14-19), where you'll support adults with developmental disabilities in a 1:2 or 1:3 counselor-to-camper ratio. This experience sets the foundation for everything that follows.
After Special Needs week, you'll lead cabin groups for 4-5 nights with children and teens ages 6-15. You'll work with about 8-10 counselors in a collaborative, supportive team environment.
Who Thrives Here
Counselors who thrive at Skyline are willing to be awkward, try new things, and grow alongside campers. They understand that camp work is about creating transformative experiences for others, not optimizing their own comfort. They're kind, curious, and able to adapt when plans change - which they will, because camp involves children and nature.
You'll be someone who:
Wants to learn and teach others ("See One, Do One, Teach One")
Can put community needs ahead of personal preferences
Finds joy in authentic engagement over polished performance
Is comfortable with special needs populations or eager to learn
Values flexibility and can handle the unexpected with grace
What You'll Do
Live with diverse groups of campers; help each camper grow and adjust to camp life
Assist campers with activities of daily living while maintaining physical and emotional safety
Guide and support campers in group and all-camp activities
Lead/assist activities for groups of 5-15 campers: wild edible hikes, gardening, tree climbing, cooking, farm tours, goat walks, pond play, boating, fishing, archery, journaling, sports & games, singing & drumming, theatre games, low ropes course, stargazing, yoga, shelter building, free play and more
Participate in staff training and ongoing professional development
Weekly diligent cleaning of camp facilities
The month of June starts with one week of training followed by 1 week of 5 night camp with adults with a range of special needs working with a ratio of 1 counselor to 2 or 3 campers. You will work with about 12 overnight counselors and two counseleaders to facilitate these camps. The rest of the summer includes 5 weeks of 4 or 5 night camps with children ages 6-16. In these weeks, you work with about 8 counselors working with a ratio of 1 counselor to 5 or 6 typically developing campers.
Counselors work from Sunday at 10am until Friday at 5pm (training week is different). Lodging is in a conference center building on weekends. When working overnight camp, lodging is in rustic cabins with campers. Counselors have time off 2 hours each day in addition to Friday nights and Saturdays.
For the 1 week of training and six weeks of camp, overnight counselors are paid $445 weekly, or $3115 for the summer. There is an optional FREE lifeguard training for staff May 31-June 4.
